(Editorial, Oct 23 2009)
This election to the Roing 43rd constituency comes as a surprise. The newly elected legislative member Laeta Umbrey fulfilled the promise for victory to all those people who had trusted and supported him. The consecutive defeat of INC from Roing in 2006 by-election and 2009 general election has terribly shaken the party base and the conventional wisdom of Mithi’s invincibility has been awfully proved wrong. Following the declaration of poll results, incidences of stray violence are also being reported which is a blot in this democratic process. If INC faces humiliation in its defeat then it must appreciate the fact that Umbrey too had went through that same fate. Today he triumphs as a popularly elected leader defeating all odds with sweeping change in the electorate behavior.
Going by the voting pattern in this Roing election, it shows that Congress retained its support in the rural areas and even fared well in places like lower areas of town like Midland and Agamgite where the party has a poor support base. However it miserably failed to draw support from the govt employees and working class in the urban areas. Traditionally in a state like Arunachal, the electorate mandate is strongly decided by the ruling party factor since it commands the assured support of the govt employees. It was in the 2009 parliamentary election that under the banner of CoSAAP the employees voted massively against the ruling party. However after partial fulfillment of their demand, mood swayed in favour of ruling party with CoSAAP posing no threat, thereby INC gaining absolute majority in the state assembly. Yet it is intriguing that in Roing the govt employees became the decisive factor in determining the poll victory. As had been rumored earlier of Mithi loosing his clout in the state congress party, the electorate behavior in Roing proves the point. It is a great disappointment to supporters of INC who had wished to be on the safer side believing it to be the ruling party. This election went on in the backdrop of great political upheaval for supremacy with reports of infighting within the Congress party.
With the poll deciding factor shifting its loyalty the rich elites from the Idu Mishmi tribal community that enjoyed political supremacy in Roing during Mithi’s rule has come to an end. It is now being professed as the end of Mithi era and the dawn of Umbrey era. The changed electorate behavior is a wake up call to the all those vast majority of local tribal community to shed their old ideas of retaining their economy on the strength of political supremacy. During 90’s when Govt of India declared complete ban on timber business the tribal community then went in a state of depression. However that corrected the behavior of a lavish money culture and made people devote in education looking for prestigious govt jobs. As said ‘All’s well that ends well’, the time now is for local tribal people to inculcate contemporary ideas with education as their strong support base. Thankfully it’s Umbrey who taught the lesson.

congress could still won the election if the party had act fairly.Pomoya wasn't the right candidate for the ticket, her qualification was she is Mst.Mithi.Just to retain the power or Mr.Mithi is too greedy to gave the ticket to others. What he planned is to keep both the power as MP and MLA.Datule should have been considered again or simply they should have given it to Mr.Umbrey.What hurt Mr.Miuly the most was, they 'INC' did not call him even for the meeting.Unstable chamchas were called and the most loyal INC (Mithi's core supporter) was even not informed about the meeting.
If anyone of you gets hurt with this post, then never visit this site again. The commands you read here are facts, not theory.Jo sach hai usse digest karne mean problem hota jurur hai.Even you agree this fact, but you doesn't want to show it.If anyone of you think you are the real INC member then you should question the people who are acting as like boss. You just go with the boss' decision and they think they can do anything. There is no scope for youths in INC.Look at the chamchas other than Raja Linggi,no one is shinning. No one gets handsome contract other than the family members.Youths are just mobilized to create hue and cry, nothing more.
I second Brahni's Comment. When you butter the family, the family will throw a few scraps down for you. Raja Linggi lives off those scraps, it's a known fact. People and youth must wake up to the fact that they have been taken for a ride. Their future is nomore linked to the Mithis,
if that was the case with mithi and his chamchas, then here on wht will follow is the same with umbrey. Only the chamchas of umbrey will again benefit.
ONe has to take care that the reasons for which mithi is criticised should not be repeated in umbrey.
in the end we will come to realise sab politicans ek hi khet ka muli he..
whats is disgusting is that youths are not given opportunities. When it comes to leadership its not about who is old and new, they should see who is capable of leading the team/group/party.we need some reforms, not the old style of mithi.two decades and no development.hope mr umbrey considers all the things that gone wrong in mithi era and try not to repeat the things.youths should be given equal opportunitie, irrespective of which party they supported.
Ho la la.. One might 've his/her opinion of the party according to their liking. Practically one tends to join that party where his/her interest actually lies. Everyone is causious of their ownn interest. But this interest has become a tumor. Even after 10 or 20 years come back and check out Roing: swine, cows, srtay dogs and all gonna be loitering on the streets and bazaar areas. Shops hardly remains open till 7, roads gonna 've big pot holes after heavy rainfall.Everythings gonna be the same. Neither Mithis or Laeta can bring any change. If you all wanna see a sea change then 'EACH OF YOU MUST CHANGE'. A change from within must prop out. If you gonna add 20% of cement instead of 50% requirement for constructing a culvert then blame yourself not others.
He is efficient, he isn't- rubbish talks.
It's a welcome change for the lower dibang valley district-when one rule for a long time one feels invincible and takes everything for granted. the cries of the common people is unheard. now the electorate voted for Umbrey with hope for peace, security & development as their slogan goes. However, one thing Mr. Umbrey has to keep in mind is this that show some development, do some work for the people of roing. If he becomes like Mr. Mithi as the Mishmis said then serve him right, never take the electorate for granted!!!!
getting roing news on net is very good.but it is impartial as it show only issues concerned aboutRoing only.please put information on Dambuk and Meka also.
The Roing News is run by a single person. And the very same person is responsible for publishing the eastern mail, the print version also along with the web edition. Its because of such constraints that coverage is very poor. But even then the publication will try its best for maximum coverage.
only Raja Linggi was getting contract becoz watever the reason was.Lata is giving Contract to college student what good is this doing. This is more worst.Student should not be given contract untill he/she has completed their studies
WHEN I GO THROUGH THE ELECTIONPHASE COMMENTS ITS REALLY SAD TO SEE THAT PEOPLE CAN REALLY BAD MOUTH ABOUT EVERYONE.INSTEAD OF BAD MOUTHING WHY DONT WE GUYS CHANGE OURSELVES?
